Mike one of Olé’s greatest success stories, a player that was there when Olé first opened its doors, and eventually went on to become an All White. He started out in Plimmerton and ended up seeing the world, and getting a university degree as result of his exceptional footballing talent.
Mike represented NZ at the 1997 u17 World Cup in Egypt, and then played in France for Vannes Olympique Club at the age of 18. Soon after he followed in the footsteps of Ryan Nelsen and Simon Elliott by accepting a scholarship at Stanford University in the United States. He went on to be captain at Stanford and was drafted by the San Jose Earthquakes of Major League Soccer (MLS) in 2004. Wilson’s professional career then took him to the Minnesota Thunder (USL) for 3 seasons where he was consistent starter in both midfield and defense. In 2008 he became the first kiwi to play professionally in Ecuador when he signed with Sociedad Deportivo Aucus, and played under famous Bolivian coach Marco Etcheverry. Wilson was also capped 7 times by New Zealand, between 2003 and 2006, and was a member of the 2003 Confederations Cup Finals team in France.
Wilson is now retired and lives in New Hampshire with his wife Keely. He is still very involved with Olé.
